Dixons Retail, owners of electronics stores PC World and Currys, this year launched a move into the digital streaming industry with the introduction of their KnowHow Movies brand, and they have today moved to expand that service beyond their current offering of PC and tablet computers, with LG Electronics confirming that in the UK region, the service will feature as a downloadable option on their 2012 line of smart TV sets.
Offering a range of current and classic films on a pay-per-view basis, the service will be instantly accessible from the smart TV range as of today.
LG, meanwhile, now have a wider range of online streaming services to offer to their customers directly, as KnowHow movies joins Netflix and LoveFilm, along with lower-profile rivals such as Blinkbox and Acetrax.
KnowHow business development director Niall O’Keeffe noted of the launch: “LG’s Smart TV platform is award-winning and was a natural partner for the evolution of our pay-per-view service. Already popular on PCs and tablets, we look forward to consumers enjoying the KnowHow Movies service on the big screen.”
LG’s regional ‘senior contents & services manager’ Darren Petersen added his view, stating: “Our Smart TV platform represents the best in choice and variety for consumers and KnowHow Movies is the perfect example of how we continue to build our Smart TV platform to respond to consumers’ needs. We are delighted to be partnering with one of Europe’s leading electrical retailers from a content perspective and look forward to enhancing the unique benefits it can bring to the Smart TV experience in store and through the customer journey.”
With the service now on its first-ever expansion since its launch in February, does the offering on LG represent a statement of intent on Dixons’ ambitious plans to break into the online TV market, and will they be able to follow up their move with the viewing numbers?
